Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the study, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases that affect the tissues that surround and support the teeth, such as the gums, the alveolar bone, the periodontal ligament and the root cementum. Periodontal problems are common and can affect overall oral health if not properly treated.

The periodontal system is composed of several tissues that have the function of keeping teeth fixed in the maxillary or mandibular bone.
